The big news for this past week is that I failed my glucose screen. It's the gestational diabetes screen that I did a week and a half ago. Apparently lots of people fail it, but we were still pretty shocked - my blood sugar has always tended to be low, not high, when I'm pregnant. So yesterday I fasted starting at midnight the night before, then went in at 8:45 for the first of four blood draws. The first one was fasting, then I drank a bottle of lemon lime flavored glucose drink (I don't recommend serving this at your next cocktail hour), then I spent the next 3.5 hours getting hourly blood draws and not throwing up. If you vomit you have to start all over, so I stayed upright and when all else failed just clenched my mouth shut and swallowed a lot. Richard was a trooper and stayed with me to keep me company for the whole thing, and we went for a nice walk to see some of the historic houses near by since it was a beautiful day outside. I did not get sick until they drew my blood for the last time and we left, then I promptly rid myself of whatever lemon-lime syrup I had left and we went out to lunch. Hopefully this is all for nothing, the initial screen is not very sensitive and only 1/3 of women who fail it actually have gestational diabetes when they check with this more sensitive test. So I'm trying not to worry about it.
We had dinner with Adrienne and Michael last night, and Adrienne told Ruby (14 months) that there was a baby in my stomach. That was a little abstract for her, but she was very interested in my belly button sticking out, so she took to poking it and saying "baby." I worry she may be a little confused later. . .
Our niece Abi, on the other hand, is now 6 and has the whole thing figured out. When I saw her at her birthday dinner, this is how it went:
Abi: Is the baby still in there?
Me: Yes, for a little while longer.
Abi: I think she's going to stay in there forever! (Abi is very excited she's a girl, and has named her Alaira and I'm pretty sure is expecting her to be some sort of fairy)
Me: I hope not!
Abi: Yes she is! (leans over to put her ear on my stomach) I can hear her laughing because she is staying there forever!
I think Abi may be a bad influence.
